Hard Disk Drive or HDD refers to the type of re-writeable media that is inflexible, as opposed to a floppy disk. A hard drive typically contains multiple hard disk platters.

Hard disks are rigid aluminum or glass disks about 3.5" in diameter in a personal computer, and smaller in a laptop. They are coated with ferromagnetic material and rotate around a central axle.Data is transferred magnetically by a read/write head. A hard disk drive for a personal computer may contain as many as eight hard disks, rotating around the same axle. Most major hard drive and motherboard vendors now support self-monitoring, analysis, and reporting technology (S.M.A.R.T.), by which impending failures can be predicted, allowing the user to be alerted to prevent data loss.
